What is Booksgiving?
It’s a Jenny Lawson holiday. She’s kind of a HUGE deal to me, seeings how she’s my favorite author/blogger AND I WOULD PROBABLY MAKE IT INCREDIBLY AWKWARD IF I EVER MET HER! I’d want to be best friends but because I’d make it weird thanks to fan girling so hard, she’d possibly consider getting a restraining order.
…and then I would be so sad that I ruined my one shot.
So anyways, I was creeping Jenny’s blog a few days ago- it had been awhile since I’d popped over.
I know, I’m the worst fan girl. I probably just lost some points because I admitted I don’t read her blog every day. But I’m in the bookclub so that has to count for something.
Anyway, I saw the Booksgiving post and was intrigued. I mean, I’m always intrigued by anything she writes because she’s fucking fantastic, but wtf is Bookgiving?!
The short version of it is she sends books to a few people who comment on her yearly Bookgiving post– sometimes it’s a copy of one of her books or a different book a reader has listed on their Amazon wishlist/added in said comments. To read the actual, much more in depth post, click here.
I thought this was a brilliant idea.
I don’t celebrate many holidays, but I can get behind Booksgiving. I decided to leave a comment just saying, “Hey, you’re a genius and super awesome human being for doing this”.
It turned into me overthinking, so it took three tries to actually write a comment I didn’t completely hate. However, it turned out to be super awkward despite trying to avoid being super awkward. I should have just posted what I’ve written above.
Sigh. I’m pretty sure I at least managed to get my point across but in an attempt to make myself feel better, I decided she probably didn’t even read it because the amount of comments were outrageous. At least I hope she didn’t.
Oh. There’s another part of Booksgiving- but I’ll come back to that.
Earlier today, I shared someone’s IG post to my stories- it was a clever little pie chart that said I always need more books.
This is true, despite the fact I have so many needing to be read. And not much time for reading. I’m working on carving some more time out, though.
After a long day at work, I came home to a package from Amazon sitting on the table, which was surprising because I was under the impression the two things I have ordered recently weren’t going to be here until at least Friday.
I opened the box to find A HARRY POTTER KNITTING BOOK!!!

How sweet of my best friend, Jess, to buy this for me! She had sent me a picture of it not too long ago, and I added it to my Amazon wishlist because Harry Potter.
…except Jessica wasn’t the one who bought it.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHO SENT THIS TO ME!
I messaged my family, even though I didn’t think any of them had bought it for me (AND I WAS RIGHT!). I was 100% certain it wasn’t from the gentleman caller, either.
I even posted it on FB.
I DON’T KNOW WHO TO THANK FOR THIS! I even triple checked to make sure I didn’t somehow order it when I was half asleep.
But then something occurred to me– I MAY HAVE BEEN BOOKSGIVINGED!
Remember I told you there’s a second part to Booksgiving? Jenny provided instructions for people to participate and said that we could also participate and send books to each other anonymously.
I didn’t read the directions because I wasn’t interested in getting a book- I just wanted to tell her she’s an awesome human being.
…but I think I ended up getting a surprise book out of the deal. Which makes me feel bad because I wasn’t looking to get a book and I want to thank them but don’t know how.
So if you were the one who Booksgivinged me, THANK YOU SO MUCH- YOU BRIGHTENED MY SEMI SHITTASTIC DAY WITH YOUR GENEROSITY. I HOPE YOU WIN THE LOTTERY!
Or someone brings you a bouquet of tacos.
OR BOTH!
More posts to come.
Booksgiving is amazing and should be a national holiday. Bless Jenny at theblogess.com for coming up with it. Everyone always can use more books!
